BT 36 years Service

About my work experience

1973. At age 16 I left Midhurst Grammar school & started a three year apprenticeship with the GPO (PO engineers). PO Telephone engineering apprentices where called TTA (Trainee technician apprentice). My headquarters where at the TEC (Telecoms engineering Centre) in Dragon street, Petersfield. This was at the site of the old drill hall (now a residential court yard opposite ATS). The TTA training consisted of job shadowing for the first two years.  TTAs also attended three residential training courses at bletchley park.

Here is a circuit diagram for a Telephone 746, it was a handout on the TTA 'B' Course held at Bletchley Park in 1973.

I also attended Chichester tech collage on day release. The final year of my apprenticeship was spent working in Petersfield Exchange (In Charles street). I stayed working in this Exchange until 1988. During my time at PCV ATE (Petersfield Automatic Telephone Exchange) I worked on the following strowger equipment;

50 point linefinders, Subs uniselectors, Group selectors (2000type & 4000type)

Local call timers, Final selectors, Auto to auto relay sets, Coin & fee checking relay sets, DC2 Relay sets, AC9 Relay sets, AC11 Relay sets, Out of area exl Relay sets, Register access Relay sets, Register-translators, International registers, International call timers.

For much more history of the UK Telephone Service, with reminiscences from operators, engineers and staff please follow this link to the lightstraw ATE

By 1988 strowger was well on its way out & I was retrained at BTTC Yarnfeld Park (Stone) on System X. I was based in Cosham DPLE in the old Portsmouth Trunk Exchange building, Vectis way, Cosham. At this time System X was mainly provided as an overlay network. Cosham DPL had system X concentrators in Havant, Petersfield, Gosport, Eastergate, Portsmouth North end, Chichester & Cosham.

I also took on the role of manual board maintenance at Cosham & was responsible for the cordless level 100 switchboard & the 192 directory enquires CMS100 call queuing system (attended residential training at Fulcrum in Birmingham).

By around 1991 I was based back at Petersfield & had a mixed load of rural Exchanges. I was responsible for the day to day running of:

Petersfield SystemX, East Meon UAX13,

West Meon AXE10, Privett SAX, Liss SystemX,

Hawkley UAX13, East Mardon SAX. Harting AXE10, Rogate AXE10, Midhurst AXE10,Compton AXE10.

By around 1994 I was still based in Petersfield but was travelling further & was repairing Exchange faults from Worthing to Gosport along the south coast.

During 1995 I was trained to do customer end  faults & did this part time when the fault rate was high. Training was at Southampton (pole climbing), BTTC Yarnfield  (drop wire erection) & at Sheerness (internal wiring & faulting). Most of this repair work was in the Petersfield & Midhurst areas.

By around 2000 my patch was moved to the west of Petersfield & I worked mainly in the following Exchanges doing repair work; Bramdean AXE10, Ropley AXE10, Alresford System X , Winchester system X processor, Bishops Waltham AXE10, Twyford System X, Owslebury AXE10, Botley SystemX, Durley AXE10, Droxford AXE10, Itchen Abbas AXE10. Harestock System X, Eastleigh System X, Locksheath AXE10, Whitley System X.

Here is a list of some of the Telephone Exchanges that I have worked in. If you ever wondered where that BT Van is going - well BT often would have liked me to be in two or three different Exchanges at the same time in order to fix urgent faults..........
